Education and employment opportunities in Andong, Cambodia
Stellar Child Care Organisation has been supporting families for over 10 years in the Andong Village area.
SCCO's mission is to provide the underprivileged children and families with access to and long-term sustainable solutions in: education, family support, quality healthcare and nutrition, employment and income generation opportunities, and a safe living environment.
Over 4,000 people now live in Andong Village, a displaced community about an hour from Phnom Penh city. The village has limited access to clean water, sanitation, education or medical care, with several serious social issues impacting on everyday family life.
Our vision is a thriving, self-sustaining community that are empowered through education, and implement sustainable solutions to break the cycle of poverty & reach their potential in all aspects of life.
EARLY LITERACY CLASSES
We run grassroots community classes for students aged four and up, currently catering to 150 children each day. The high-quality classes are an opportunity to improve student’s literacy levels and engage them in a positive, exciting and safe environment. We also provide English & Computer classes for our older students. Our student's love coming to class to learn from our skilled local teachers.
FAMILY SUPPORT SERVICES
We directly support up to 50 families in the community in the form of:
- Housing Aid
- Food
- Medical Care
- Counselling
- Clothing & Hygiene
Through providing this emergency relief we aim to help families support themselves and become self-sufficient in the long-term.
COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT
Our community development programs enable the underprivileged children in Andong access to quality education. SCCO supports the local public school through providing uniforms, bags and essential materials, as well as advocating on the school’s behalf.
We also offer scholarships and vocational training opportunities, plus run capacity building self-help groups that encourage individual, family and community growth and development.
REINTEGRATION PROGRAM
From 2012 to 2018, SCCO operated a residential house for some of the most at-risk children in the community. After incredible efforts from our staff, we were able to reintegrate these children back into stable family units and independent housing. SCCO continues to work closely with these children to offer educational, financial and medical aid, in addition to guidance and mentoring.
INCOME GENERATION
SCCO runs for-purpose initiatives and social enterprises that create employment opportunities and up-skill locals. They are structured so proceeds are devoted towards fair wages and enhancing our community projects.
In the past, SCCO operated a sewing centre that employed and up-skilled six local mothers. This has now become an independently run business operated by our previous sewing trainer.
